Summer Great Books

Welcome to Gibraltar's summer reading good talks! I have invited you for two reasons. I would like to have cyber discussions about the books we are reading this summer and to give you a little experience in blogging. Blogging is nothing more than an online journal. You can create discussions and respond to each other. Some of you are reading A Separate Peace. Others are reading Water for Elephants. I would like to start with letting you start the discussion. Once one of you gets it going, then I will explain some of the other features like tags or labels unless you figure it out. I know you are busy working, but I also know that you are reading. I just finished Water for Elephants, and am reading several others. I know you have to read The Grapes of Wrath, so you can include that if you would like. Woot, as you all say! You should be able to post by hitting the reply to post button.

  3. this is it-you are doing it correctly keep going! Max just finished Balzac-so he will hopefully post. Please tell Katherine to let us know how she is liking Water for Elephants. I have so much to say about that book, but I want to wait until she is finished. You should read it, too. I am going to start The time Traveler's Wife next.

  4. Hey! Its max. Balzac and the little chinese seamstress. What do I have to say about that book. Well let me just say the chinese seamstress is a BITCH! Luo and the narrator helped her all throughout the novel and then BAM! she just walks away. She gives them nothing in return and has such an abrupt departure.

It was a good book. I liked the way it was written and everything. But next on my list is to finish up Breaking Dawn. I've been in that book forever. I need to finish it and then after i'll start the grapes of wrath.

  5. katherine is almost done with water for elephants and likes it alot. She says i should read it. it looks interesting.... i gave up on grapes for now. will resume later. i'm just in the mood for FUN books now, not ones that are a chore to read.
I should read balzac... i stared it a while ago. NOTE TO MAX: breaking dawn was a TERRIBLE book. the ending is NOT worth your time.

  8. max: the end was BORRRRRING. someone needed to die. There was no climax. jane needed to die. but yeah. anyway, herman, you know i read a separate peace during school. We all should have read it: it would have been interesting to discuss. There's a crutial point to debate in the story (katherine and i have been debating it.) but i won't post it here because it would give stuff away to anyone else who might read it (molly)

  11. I want to read a separate piece now. I think i might. But I agree with jeffrey that someone needed to die, maybe Alice.

  12. Welcome Molly-we are waiting for you so we can discuss ASP. Not to hurry you-it is summer-suppose to be relaxing. I am back from Pound so I will be checking. OK-the Time Traveler's Wife-half done. Hmm... interesting. The two first meet when she is six. I may start a no brainer for fun.

  14. Pound, WI where I was visiting friends.
I'll be home for the next two weeks before I head out west to Canada and Montana. So TANNER- get going! MOLLY-we want to hear from you! And LILLI AND CAMILLE-where are you???!!!
For ASP readers-think about your biggest rival in school-feelings-attitude.
For Water for Elephants-I totally see myself in this book---how?
Balzac and the Little Chinese Princess -how did this move you? I wanted to KILL!!

  15. Montana and Canada???? Herm, where are you going????? Exactly?? Dude, I totally see myself in ASP... As for my rival, I'll keep it to myself. Wo

  16. Would I do the terrible deed that is central to the book???? Depending on the day.... Maybe... (evil grin) (the rival is not on this blog, don't worry.)

  17. But I totally relate to the school rival thing... And feel like gene... Molly has to finish so we can talk plainly!!!

  18. Just visiting a girlfriend and taking a road trip or two -Yellowstone and Glacier Nat. Pk. Have major insecuritiies about leaving. worrying about that black nosed thing in the picture above.
My rival was Joni P. Just drove me crazy-had the parts in the plays, the boy, the everything. Grrrr. Don't know if I would have done the Gene thing-but I can see how it COULD BE DONE..
Just finished Elegance of Heghogs Now that is an interesting book once you get into it. I would recommend it. I could see myself in that one, too. The hidden personalities we all have. But I don't think I hide mine that much. It kind of overlows.
Yes-get Molly going. What happened to Tanner? I think we should keep this beyond summer-your toughts?
You are NOT a Gene-you are a star.

  19. Herm-how was glacier national park? i went there last year: it was amazing!!!

I read water for elephants. An interesting book to be sure, intriguing and interesting. HOwever, i disagree with all this talk of the great ending. I was not very impressed.
SPOILERS BELOW! ANYONE WHO WANTS TO READ THE BOOK, DO NOT READ THIS!!!
Book where the climax is previewed at the beginning are tricky things. The ending needs to be good enough and have enough of a twist that the reader is still shocked and impressed by the climax, even though they thought they knew what happened all along. Water for Elephants did have a twist in the climax that you didn't know, but it was not big enough to impress me: i still felt like i had known how it would end all along, though i didn't know every detail. It was supposed to be magical, but it wasn't for me. The book was certainly good, but could have been better if the prologue had not included 99% of the actual climax.
I still have barely started grapes of wrath: summer should be for fun reading.

  20. wow! I am surprised-you are one of the few who felt that way. I think I liked it because it was full of the flashbacks between the two times--he loved that life-caring for the animals-and then he is stuck at the end of his life in a place and then--HE BREAKS FREE. Maybe it has to do with age. I visited many nursing homes when my mother was sick, and it is GROSS! I'd like to think I could break free at that age. Plus it is kind of like a pay it forward-they took care of that one man, and now he is going to be taken care of.

Glacier was amazing! I think the Canadian Rockies were better than the U.S. Rockies-more majestic. My girl friend and I covered 1500 miles of it all from Bozeman, MT up to Canada and back. visited the Broom Factory that makes all the brooms for all of the Harry Potter movies. I will send you the link to see the pictures if you are interested. The highlight of the trip was cruising through Glacier on a Harley-an unexpected adventure! Ah...life is interesting.
